On the death of an individual, a tax is levied on the transfer of any property. The estate tax is different from inheritance tax which is imposed by some states on the beneficiary of the property. There are more than 20 states which levy state estate tax, which differs from the federal tax system. This means your estate could be liable to state estate tax even if it is not liable under federal tax laws.
